Coach Jojo Acosta mentors Barbie Almalbis: Honing the voice of a female rock star
Barbie Almalbis is a renowned Filipino singer-songwriter and guitarist, celebrated for her contributions to the Philippine alternative rock and OPM (Original Pilipino Music). She’s considered as one of the most influential female musicians in the country, inspiring many artists with her unique sound and heartfelt songwriting.
Barbie presently undergoes a formal voice training with Coach Jojo Acosta, one of the Philippines’ most respected vocal coaches. Acosta, known for his work with top OPM artists, helped refine Barbie’s already distinct voice — polishing its ethereal, delicate quality while strengthening her control and range.
Barbie’s musical journey started with the band ‘Hungry Young Poets’ (1995 to 1999). She first gained fame as its lead vocalist and guitarist known for the hit song ‘Torpe’. After the ‘Hungry Young Poets’ disbanded, she formed the “Barbie’s Cradle” (1999–2005), which produced hits like ‘Tabing Ilog’ (theme of the popular TV series) and ‘Firewoman’. In 2005, Barbie pursued a solo career, releasing the albums: ‘Barbie Almalbis’ (2006) that featured ‘Just A Smile’; ‘Goodbye My Shadow’ (2011); and ‘My New Heart’ (2017).
Barbie is known for her distinctive, ethereal voice and intricate guitar chords, blending alternative rock, folk, and pop influences. She is often compared to international artists like Alanis Morissette and The Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan.
Barbie remains active in the music scene, performing live, collaborating with other artists, and releasing new music. She is also involved in mentoring young musicians.
